Several residence halls operated by the Studierendenwerk Mainz offer accessible rooms and apartments. These include accessible bathroom facilities, kitchens, and furnishings.

HandicapX GmbH – Accessible Lifestyle is an information portal for people with disabilities, chronically ill people, those requiring care, and seniors for greater accessibility in life (in German).

Driver’s license for people with physical disabilities

On the TÜV-Süd website you can find valuable information on driver’s licenses, testing, and vehicle modifications (in German).

On the MPU information page you can find support in obtaining a driver’s license with a neurological condition (in German).

Financial aid for vehicle purchase and modification

Especially for people in rural regions, obtaining a driver’s license, purchasing a vehicle, and modifying it to fit their individual needs may be necessary for them to be able to have a job or study. You can apply for financial aid to help with this from the responsible funding bodies (employers’ liability insurance association (Berufsgenossenschaft), German Federal Employment Agency (BA), state welfare offices (Landeswohlfahrtsverband), or social services office (Sozialamt) under the Regulation on Motor Vehicle Assistance for Vocational Rehabilitation (Kraftfahrzeughilfe-Verordnung, KfzHV). Transportation services for people with disabilities and medical transports

Many municipalities (usually social services offices) offer transportation services for people with disabilities. Since these services and their cost coverage vary by region, individuals must inquire locally.

Additionally, many private providers and taxi companies offer wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Searching in online directories or directly contacting local taxi companies is recommended, as many do not openly advertise these services.

Medical transport costs may be partially covered by health insurance. Here, too, you should obtain specific information beforehand.
